In this blog, we'll explain what has changed, who is still eligible for support, and what steps you need to take to maintain your legal status in Canada.
If you're an Iranian national currently living in Canada on a temporary work permit, it's important to understand recent changes to the special measures that have been helping Iranian temporary residents since 2022. As of March 1, 2026, significant changes have taken effect that may impact your ability to stay and work in Canada.
What Changed on March 1, 2026?
As of March 1, 2026, the original special measures for Iranian nationals expired. A new, more limited policy has taken effect that focuses specifically on work permit extensions for eligible Iranian nationals.
What ended on February 28, 2026:
Open work permit applications for Iranian visitors and students
In-Canada study permit applications for Iranian nationals
Priority processing for applications
What's available under the new policy:
One-time work permit extensions for eligible Iranian nationals
Extensions valid until March 31, 2027
Standard processing times apply
Who Is Eligible for the Work Permit Extension?
Under the new policy, you may be eligible for a work permit extension if you meet all of the following criteria:
Eligibility requirements:
You are an Iranian national
You hold a valid work permit that was issued on or before February 28, 2025
You are currently in Canada
You remain in Canada during the processing of your extension application
You meet standard admissibility requirements
Important exclusions:
If you were already issued a work permit under the previous special measures, you are not eligible
If your work permit was issued after February 28, 2025, you are not eligible
If you are on a visitor visa or study permit (not a work permit), you are not eligible
What Does This Mean for You?
If you hold a valid work permit issued on or before February 28, 2025:
You may be eligible to apply for a one-time extension valid until March 31, 2027. This gives you additional time to continue working legally in Canada, build Canadian work experience, and explore pathways to permanent residency.
If you were hoping to apply for an open work permit as a visitor or student:
Unfortunately, this option is no longer available. You will need to explore other immigration pathways, such as applying for a study permit or seeking employer-specific work permits through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process.
Your Long-Term Options
While the work permit extension provides temporary relief, it's important to start planning for long-term solutions:
Permanent Residency Through Express Entry: If you have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada, you may qualify for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your Express Entry score, significantly increasing your chances of permanent residency.
Study Permit and PGWP: Further your education at a Designated Learning Institution and gain additional work experience through a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
Take Action Now
The changes to the special measures mean your options are more limited than before. If you're eligible for the work permit extension, apply as soon as possible to maintain your legal status. More importantly, start planning for permanent residency now — the extension is only valid until March 31, 2027.
